The Official Publications Department at the Israel State Archives collects and catalogues all publications issued by the various Government ministries, government and public commissions of inquiry, national corporations and local authorities.

These publications are the end product of prolonged work carried out  on the basis of documents and files which are themselves archival material. The chief advantage of these publications is that they are open to the public, while the documents and files on these topics are not available for public viewing, usually being classified for thirty years. Publications are deposited in the Israel State Archives in accordance with Government Resolution no. 823 of 17 September 1967. This resolution is binding upon all government bodies, obliging them to submit all publications issued to the Israel State Archives within two weeks of publication.

Once a year the department publishes a bibliographical catalogue of all publications received in the previous year. The bilingual catalogue (Hebrew-English) is distributed to Government offices, libraries and customers in Israel and abroad.
