Information and Cataloguing Department

The Information and Cataloguing Department is in charge of the intellectual and administrative control of the archival material in the Israel State Archives. The  Archives holds some 40 kilometres  worth of heterogeneous archival material. Each year the Archives receives about one kilometre worth of material.


Chief responsibilities:
The department is responsible for setting up, maintaining and improving the computerized database of the Israel State Archives. The database is built from cataloguing at the various levels of the archival hierarchy, from department level down to individual items,  and from the original accession lists.


In accordance with the principle of "respect for provenance" of archival material, the department is in charge of managing the various record groups (fonds) of the archives, merging the description of material received into the existing record groups and opening new groups as necessary. The department determines the order of description, cataloguing and classification of the various levels within each record group according to professional principles. The department deals with ongoing improvement of the database by revising and amending old lists.

 

The department is responsible for the contents and archival database in the Israel State Archives website.

 

The department also takes part in other work done at the Israel State Archives, such as:

• Participation in the scanning and miniaturization work done at the Archives
• Coordinating, studying and taking part in committees on management and preservation of electronic records
• Participation in the European Union's Minerva project.
